How to be fire ready
Fire seasons are starting earlier and finishing later, leaving less time to ensure that you’re prepared in the event of a fire.
Our area has been lucky enough to avoid major fires in recent times, but that doesn’t mean we won’t in the future, which is why everyone needs to use the Fireready checklist below. Kyneton Brigade is also part of the state-wide grassland monitoring program.
HAVE A PLAN Every home needs a Fireready plan covering what to take, where to go, what routes to take, and even what to do with pets. The plan also details important decisions, when to leave and what to do if you’re caught in the path of a fire. Download a free Fire Plan Kit here, or contact the Brigade.

PREPARE YOUR PROPERTY EARLY Clear the gutters, trim back bushes and move anything combustible away from buildings. If you’re on acres, slash the grass down low to help prevent a fire from spreading and check that fire pumps are working. If you’re new to the area, the Brigade can drop by to give you some advice.

MONITOR CONDITIONS AND ALERTS Across spring and summer, always know the Fire Danger ratings and have the Vic Emergency App set up on your devices. On high-risk days, leaving early is always a safe decision, but if you decide to stay and fight the fire, then protect yourself as radiant heat and smoke will kill you long before the flames arrive.
